A VANISHING MELODY: THE CALL OF THE PIPING PLOVER

The cryptic coloring of piping plovers makes them difficult to see in their natural surroundings; clearly an advantage against predators, but a disadvantage when it comes to public interest and attention. As a result, piping plovers have become unwitting competitors in the race for beachfront property, river sandbars, and prairie wetlands.
