Butterflies are Free
There are about
2,000 more painted lady butterflies loose in the
District, thanks to the NRD's annual Butterfly Larvae
program. Soon after the start of school, kits were
shipped, at the NRD's expense, to more than 70 schools,
where second graders studied the lifecycle of
butterflies. Each school built its own enclosure and
watched the creatures through the larvae, chrysalis and
butterfly stages. The butterflies were then released.
The program, which has been popular with teachers since
its beginning in 2003, fits into a variety of classroom
activities and compliments the NRD's outdoor classroom
program.

Plant
Waterwise
The City of Lincoln has developed
a garden consisting of plants that require minimal
amounts of water to flourish. Fittingly, the garden is
located outside the Lincoln Water System building, at
2021 N. 27th Street. The garden, besides being a
pleasant place for a stroll, shows residents how
waterwise plants look when mature, how they should be
planted, etc. More information about planting waterwise
can be found on the City
web site. |
