Founded in 1883, the American Ornithologists' Union is the oldest and largest organization in the New World devoted to the scientific study of birds. Although the AOU primarily is a professional organization, its membership of about 4,000 includes many amateurs dedicated to the advancement of ornithological science.

New Portal for Manuscript Submission

The University of California Press took over as publisher of The Auk in 2009, and on 10 June 2009 ScholarOne Manuscripts ™ will replace Rapid Review as the portal for submission of manuscripts, including regular research articles, solicited manuscripts, and letters to the Editor. An efficient review process requires that the Editor be able to draw upon a large army of able volunteers to serve as reviewers. We have transferred all existing reviewer profiles from Rapid Review to ScholarOne, but we encourage potential reviewers to visit The Auks site on ScholarOne and either check and update their information or add themselves as potential reviewers. More information can be found on the Instruction to Authors.

2009 Research Award recipients

The 2009 recipients of AOU Research Awards have been announced.

New Checklist of North American Birds interface

The AOU is pleased to announce a new web page for the Check-list of North and Middle American Birds. The check-list is now in a searchable database. You can browse the full list of species as well as search by scientific/common name, family, or order. You can also download the entire list or their search results in an Excel compatible text file. Species in the search results table are linked to the respective Birds of North America Online species accounts, if an account is available online.

The new check-list page also has a link to the committee's main page, the 7th Check-list and supplements, pending and prior proposals, and guidelines for submitting a proposal.
